Events:

- 27 Rajab 621 AD, 9th or 10th year of Prophet hood
-Prophet(Saw)'s heavenly journey of the night to Masjid Al-Aqsa ( Temple of Solomon) and his ascension.
-More details in the Hadith than in Quran, main details given in Surah Isra.
- Prophet(SAW) was asleep in Al-Hateem, (Al Hijr or Hijr e Ismail)
- Prophet(SAW) was awaken by Archangel Jibrael.
"Glory to One Who took his servant for a journey from the Sacred Mosque (In Makkah) to the Farthest Mosque ( in Jerusalem)........." -Surah 17
-The heart of the Holy Prophet (SAW) was taken out and washed with the water of Zam-Zam and was replaced in his chest.
- Holy Prophet(SAW) was carried on Burraq(white beast looking like a mule.)its step reached the farthest point which it could see
- Prophet (SAW) reached Temple of Solomon and me all of the Prophets and led prayer in congregation for all of them.
-He was offered two cups/glasses. One was of milk, the other of wine, Prophet(SAW) chose the milk and drank it all
-Then, he was taken to the heavens ascended to the heavens by the Burraq. As they reached first Heaven there identity was asked and Jibrael let the gate of heaven be opened and Holy Prophet(SAW) met all of the prophets not in their physical forms but their spiritual/celestial reality

2nd: Hazrat Yahya & Isa
3rd: Hazrat Yusuf
4th: Hazrat Idrees
5th:Hazrat Harun
6th: Hazrat Musa
7th: Hazrat Ibrahim
- tHen they reached the Lote Tree also known as"Sidrah Al Muntaha"
- Hazrat Jibrael could not anymore accompany Prophet(SAW) as his wings would burn as stated in the Quran:
"Near the Lote Tree beyond which none may pass. Near it is the Garden of Abode. Behold, the Lote Tree is shrouded (in mystery)" (53:14-16)
- Prophet(SAW proceeded to God Himself alone he recieved the gift of daily prayers (salat) and last two verses of Surah Baqarah were revealed. He had direct conversation with Allah
- Prophet(SAW) accompanied by Jibrael was shown Paradise and Hell. People experienced torment in Hell. People swallowing red hot stones with noses of camels they were those who unjustly eat the property of orphans and people with bellies to big to move around, those who took usury.
-On Prophet Musa's advice the daily prayers were reduced to 5 from 50. Prophet(SAW) went back to Jerusalem and then to Makkah.
-Prophet(SAW) narrated the journey to many companions including Hazrat Ali's sister, Umm Hani and Abu Bakr was the first to believe in him without any hesitation and earned the title of Siddiq.
-Makkans did not believe him but were astonished when Prophet(SAW) told them details of Temple of Solomon.



Importance:

Prophet(SAW) was relieved and found the journey very calm and soothing and he was comforted when he lost his wife, Khadija and Uncle Abu Talib.
Prophet(SAW) reached the highest point of the universe. The Lote Tree after the seven heavens, he met previous Prophets, no other Prophet was rewarded such a journey except for Muhammad(SAW). He led the congregational prayer for all of the Prophets, so he holds an exalted status.
The second pillar of Islam Salat(daily prayers were gifted to Prophet(SAW) to develop a link between the Creator and creations and to strengthen the bond with Allah. The Quran says "And establish regular prayer in order to remember Me" (20:14) The experience of Miraj brought him hope as he saw Paradise and Hell.
