the products of reaction of sulphur dioxide with acidified potassium dichromate:
Cr2O7^-2 + 3SO2 + 2H+ --> 2Cr^3+ + 3SO4^-2 + H2O

the products of reaction of sulphur dioxide with acidified potassium manganate:
2MnO4^1- +5SO2 + 2H2O --> 2Mn^2+ +5SO4^2- + 4H+

we use ACIDIFIED potassium dichromate/ACIDIFIED potassium manganate as oxidants or oxidising agents.
when ACIDIFIED potassium manganate oxidises any substance (sulphur dioxide in the case above), it changes its colour 4m purple 2 colourless (or sometimes fainty pink).
when ACIDIFIED potassium dichromate oxidises any substance (sulphur dioxide in the case above), it changes its colour 4m orange 2 green.

Cr2O7(2-) + 6 e(-) + 14 H+ -> 2 Cr(3+) + 7H2O

oxygen of the dichromate requires acid to form water.
