Well Sodium Chloride is formed through ionic bonding, that is the electrons are transferred . Because they have an ionic bonding, their melting and boiling points are very high. Thus they are in a solid form at room temperature.
Ethene on the other hand has a covalent bonding where the electrons are shared. Covalent compounds usually have a lower melting and boiling point which is why ethene is in its gaseous state.
