AOA every one!
There are ten types of Directed Writing Tasks in our syllabus:
1. Formal letter
2. Informal letter
3. General Report
4. Newspaper Report
5. Magazine/newspaper article
6. Account
7. Statement
8. Leaflet
9. Speech
10. Covering letter
The following applies for all of them:
- Always follow formats
- You are restricted for your expression: limited use of ornate vocabulary and absence of emotions.
- 3 bullet points are given
- The detail of each bullet point should have varied length
- Also focus on the first and last part of the entire question
- Identify the flexible and fixed information in a question. The flexible part gives writing variation and individuality.
- Don't make a rough draft.
- Bullets should not be developed into paras. Make your own paragraphing order.
Hope this helped :D

The format for covering letter is the same as that for a formal letter.
Statements and accounts don't have formats.
@Rafae: The format you've mentioned is for a general report. As far as I know, an account does not require a format.

Add it just to be on the safe side. The format might be a part of the task fulfillment.

In fact the format is a REQUIREMENT. The one for a general report goes like this:
To: ....
From: ......
Subject: ....
Date: ....

Body with block format

AOA!
In class,we were asked to write a report on this question : "An unfortunate incident occurred on a school outing when an argument arose with the owner of a stall selling drinks by the wayside. As the senior student present, you have been asked to give the Principal a clear picture of what happened. Write your report with numbered paragraphs, with a title, the date and your signature."
For this, you follow a format of the following kind:
"(Headline)"
To: the Principal
From: (Your Name)
Subject: Argument between owner of drink stall and a student.
Date: 24th November 2010.

Then start off with your (numbered) paragraphs.
At the end mention your signature and below it your name again.

I hope this helped. :)

@abcde: Dude if u have studies the oxford progressive english 10, in dat book examiner comments are given and they havent given any comment on the address before the beginning of a letter... What they did consider was that the date shud be written in the first line of the letter/report if u dont write it than u loose marks...!!
