;) :(

yess..the question was
"In your own words explain why the father made tuneless whistling"

the main idea was that he did so was not to burst into tears by being carried by emotions!!

Depletion
we have to subtitude the key words with their synonyms
that is what we do in "in your own word questions "

key words
tough ====> strong
Emotions ===> feeling

so we have to change that phrase from " he was a tough man unaffected from emotions " into " he was a strong man unaffected by feeling "

Yeah sorry i forgot to mention the questions... :D

I wanted to know for the question: Explain in your own words what misgivings the family had about the promises they made to write and visit

I think on the whole the question is something like that.... :?:

yes!
we could write it like this
" they knew that they could do it rather than just chances of doing it "
(or)
it was likely to happen rather than just chances of it

Both would be correct !!
or any other phrase which would explain possibilities and probabilities

Both would be correct !!

i think it would be that it could happen but was unlikely.
i think u have gotten it wrong.
The passage said "seemed to be possibilities rather than probabilities."
