informal letters are basically the ones you write to your family members, friends or someone you know personally.
on the right hand corner of your paper, you write your address and the date ..
example : 5/1A Queens Garden Flats,
Maine Drive,
Queenland.
9th of May 2010
and then you start writing your letter and end it with sincerly, loving, with love, etc

formal letters are basically the other type, like writing a letter to a newspaper agency, company, magazine, etc. you do not know them personally..
so on the right hand corner of your paper you write your address and this time, you should start differently.
Example:

To Editor of Times Magaizine,
(the address of the person you are sending to)

then leave a line and write Dear Sir/Madam
and then write a heading of your letter.
example : Applying as a Journalist (you should underline this)
and then you start writing your letter. :)
oh, and you end it with yours faithfully.
example
Yours Faithfully,
(your signature)
Ms./Mr. (Dubu) <--- you should write your name in the braket :)

hope i helped :)
