I'm confused the way CIE calculate marks for AS level.

For example, lets say physics. Maximum total mark for physics (9702) is 140 in As levels, so if a student gets 35 for P1, 50 for P2 & 35 for P3, does they add these marks together and divide it by 140 and then multiply by 100?

(120/140) x 100 = 85 (A)

Is this the way?

Because when I read the GT (2011 MJ)..there was a table which had my components and to receive an A the mark should be 87, to receive 87 do they calculate using the above equation?

I'm confused

no, this is how they do it for all the sciences (bio, phys, chem). they take ur p1 result x by 31% then ur p2 x by 46% and then ur p3 x by 23%
so in ur case it would be (35/40)x 31 + (50/60)x 46 + (35/40)x23 = 85.6% = 86% (A).

Ohhh..okay :D

Thank you!! :)

that means:

80 upwards is an A
70 - 80 is a B
60 - 70 is a C
50 - 60 is a D
40 - 50 is a E

right? :D

yes (y), but that is only if the gt's are 80% for each paper so i.e ( 32,48 and 32) but as they usually aren't and especially for physics p2 which usually just has like 40 for a 'A' so thats where that table comes in and in the table they have weighted all that i.e p1 as 31%, p2 as 46% and p3 as 23% and the gt's for each. So then u take ur percentage as calculated before and as the requirement for a 'A' is 87/140 which = 62% and as you'r way above that (with 86%), you are likely to get over 90% if u actually get those marks and every year the gt changes depending on how everyone performs so this can vary slightly. And the percentage mark they give u is just a indicator of where u are in that grade group e.g if they say you got B(75) that just means the marks u got overall were in-between the gt for a 'A' and a 'B', so that isn't your actual percentage. but according to their indicator yes 80+ is a 'A' and 70-80 is a 'B' and so on..
