A control is a set-up which stays the same throughout the experiment. You can use this to determine the effect of different conditions/concentrations etc on the given samples.

Sometimes, you're asked to make a control directly, other times you should do it yourself.

Well, our teacher used to tell us that for setting a control you should keep all the condition the same but only change the independent variable.
For example, if you're using sucrose concentrations and an enzyme, you'll replace the sucrose with distilled water and NOT the enzyme.
I got that wrong in 9700/36/O/N 2011 , and I thought that might help a little.
Good luck :) !
