Is it more expensive to appear as a private candidate than appearing as a regular candidate from school/college?

Hi, I was wondering what is the difference between registering as a private candidate and registering as a regular candidate through school. What is difference between each of them and what are pros and cons of each?
Teachers in our college have been talking about how expensive it can get to register as private candidate and they have to appear in random exam centres while regular candidate is cheaper + school facilities + only 1 centre. How much of this is true?
