Suppose the original price of the car is x.
30% of x when added to the original cost = $7040
So, (x)(30/100) + x = 7040
0.3x + x = 7040
x = 7040/1.3 = 5415.38
This is the original cost, and to to find the profit subtract this from 7040, which should give 1624.62 = $1625 (to the nearest dollar).

I used it today for bio and the invigilator said nothing about it.
