its done like this
x^2 + 5x -50=0
X=5 , x= -10
3^y = 5
taking ln at both sides
yln3 = ln5
y= ln5 /ln3
y=1.46497

When k= 16, 4x^2 + 16x + 16 = 0
x^2 + 4x + 4 = 0
(x+2)(x+2)=0
x = -2

When k= -16, 4x^2 - 16x + 16 = 0
x^2 - 4x + 4 = 0
(x-2)(x-2)=0
x = 2
