the total mass remains the same but that its centre of gravity will only be 1⁄4h above the base after the tap is opened.
So p.e.=m*g*1/4h=mgh/4
So the answer is B.

It is B because it will only reach half the value of h and the transfer of water from vessel X to vessel Y will stop. So since only water is transferred of height h/2 putting the value of h = h/2 in P.E = mgh and also since only half of the mass of water is transferred then m = m/2 so putting this in the equation of P.E = mgh

P.E (lost) = (m/2) x(g) x (h/2)
P.E (lost) = mgh/4
