use y=FL/Ae....F is the same for both and so is y, so you get L1/A1e1=L2/A2e2.....A1=pi (d/2)^2....and A2=pi (d/4)^2 (because diameter is halved and hence radius becomes a quarter of the original value)...L1=L and L2=L/4....e1=8....so now you get 4L/(pi d^2x 8)=16L/(pi d^2 x e x4)....pi, d^2 and L get cancelled so you have 4/8=16/4e => e=4x2=8mm...i know, this is confusing but write it down and you'll understand

This graph is of elastic hysteresis.
The area represented by Z is the energy that is recoverable. Therefore the Area X and Y is the work done after loading and unloading.

Work Done when loading: X+Y+Z
Recovered when unloading: Z
Therefore Work Done: X + Y
