p.d is easy to calculate.....just use....the fact that potential across R effective will be equal to potentail acorss each resistor in branches. so to calculate p.d across R effective...1st calc. R effective....dat turns out to b 1000/7.....now find p.d across it......this ll be p.d across each of resistor in branches....and current in each branch cn be calculated easily via R=V/I

resistance of parallel circuit: 1/R=1/500 + 1/200
R= 1000/7 Ohm
Total resistance of circuit: 200 + 1000/7 = 2400/7 Ohm

pd across parallel: (1000/7)/(2400/7) x 240 = 100 V

current through circuit: V/R = 240/(2400/7)= 7/10 A= 0.7 A

current across 200 Ohm in series: 0.7 A
current across 200 Ohm in parallel: 100/200 = 0.5 A
current across 500 Ohm in parallel: 0.7 - 0.5 = 0.2 A

dear i had exactly done the same as you did but the answers are bit different
0.4A,80V across 200 ohm series
0.08A,160V across 500 ohm parallel
0.32A,160V across 200 ohm parallel
now am kinda sure that there is a misprint in the book but that sounds daunting......!!!!
