It will be easier if you write the total number of persons beneath each column...it will help you answer the last parts of the question...
(i) Total no. of houses in the village = 2+7+8+10+8+5
= 40
(ii) Total no. of people in the village = (0*2) + (1*7) + (2*8) +(3*10) + (4*8) +(5*5)
= 110
(iii) (a) P(the house has exactly 5 people living in it) = no. of houses having exactly 5 people living in it / total no. of houses
= 5 / 40
= 0.125
(b) P(the house has at most 3 people living in it) = no. of houses having ≤ 3 people living in it / total no. of houses
= (2+7+8+10) / 40
= 27 / 40 =0.675
(iv) P(person lives in a house in which exactly 3 people live) = no. of persons living in a house with exactly 3 people / total no. of people
= 30 / 110
= 0.273
(v) since the two residents should live in the same house with no other people, this means that we should first choose a person living in a house with exactly 2
people, then we should choose his 'partner'.
P(they live in the same house with no other people) = P(person living in a house with exactly 2 people) * P(choosing his partner)
= (16 / 110) * (1 / 110)
= 0.00132
(vi) In this question, we are considering the people who do not live alone: therefore, total no. of peole in this question = 110-7 = 103
P(third resident chosen is the first who does not live in a large household) = P(person live in large household) * P(person live in large household) *
P(person not live in large household)
= (57 / 103) * (56 / 102) * (46 / 101)
= 0.138
