it was typical. those who are backing rescue, you'll all be proven wrong once the ms is out. rescue doesn't make sense there, typical does. Typical shows that it has happened before and therefore it's "typical" for people to go through that tragedies.

As far as I am concerned, it wasn't an 'inferential' question, as mentioned above. It was clearly in the passage. The old man helped by fastening the free end of the rope to his hips/thighs and pulling Phelps out of the sea.
