I think it should be C because while photosynthesis in tube 2, CO2 is removed. That should make the solution alkaline, turning it purple, no? A lot of past papers emphasise the same point I'm making here so why on earth is the correct answer D? :shock: :?:

So there were two mark schemes, one with C and the other with D as the answer???!!! Strange!

No scouserlfc, there aren't two variants! That policy wasn't introduced until 2010. And if it was so, there would be two paper 1s to go with each ms. I'm still not satisfied with this examiner!?!

No, it CANNOT be C. This is a fundamental concept that is tested in various pps. And every time, CO2 is removed during photosynthesis, an alkaline solution is formed, which turns the indicator purple!

LOL @Nibz! Sorry for wasting your time but this is either sheer stupidity on the part of the examiner or we are wronged (which I really find hard to believe)! Scouserlfc, kindly go on!

okay sir Nibz irshad kia hai.

see first go on google and type what are CO2 and O2 are they acidic or alkaline gas.

you ll find that they are
Co2 is an acidic gas
while oxygen is neutral.

so when a dark cover is placed on a plant it respires so when it respires it gives out Co2 and the colour changes to yellow.
In the other one photosynthesis happens and O2 is given off so it is neutral and the result is Ph 7 orange.
