Null hypothesis states that there is no difference between observed result and expected result(for chi-squared) or no difference between your means of two samples(t-test)oh

So when you have calculated your chi value or t-value.....you look at the table with the correct freedom.
If your calculated value is higher than the value in the table----difference IS significant, null hypothesis is rejected and there is another factor other than chance which is causing this difference.
If your calculated value is lower than the value in the table-----difference is NOT significant, null hypothesis is accepted and the difference is caused by chance.
