Reaction mechanism of Acyl chlorides???

is the reaction mechanism of acyl chlorides with (water/ammonia/alcohol/amines) nucleophilic substitution or nucleophilic addition/elimination reaction??
it's not mentioned in the syllabus!!

It is nucleophilic addition/elimination reaction but it is not mentioned in the syllabus. We should be okay with mentioning the term "nucleophilic substitution", however misleading it may be, CIE does not care!!!!!

you will NEVER be asked regarding the mechanism of acyl chloride (ethanoyl chloride).

another thing is that the mechanism is addition-elimination although nucleophilic substitution is accepted. Go to the mark scheme of J10/42 Q.1 (c)(ii). In this question the mechanism is not required but if you read the examiners' report then few students have quoted it. Nevertheless, your marks will no be lost.

ADDITION-ELIMINATION

You people have gone through the mechanism of nucleophilic addition on C=O in AS. like wise the detailed mechanism of SN1 and SN2 have also been introduced to you in AS, which brings to you the concept of leaving group. Now just remember that chloride ion (Cl-) is a good leaving group if the attacking nucleophile is hydroxide ion (OH-). good leaving group means that the bond between chlorine and Carbon is easily broken. On the other hand OH- is very strong nucleophile and therefore bonds strongly to Carbon in comparison to Cl- means that the Carbon will form a stronger bond with O of OH- than Cl-.

Hope u can design e mechanism using this information.

We have to titrate ammonium nitrate with KMn04 or would we need to oxidize potassium iodide in the

presence of ammonium nitrate and then titrate the resulting solution with sodium thiosulphate? :|
