testing for chloride.....

Candidates should be aware that hydrochloric acid should not be used in conjunction with silver nitrate when testing for a
chloride. Nitric acid is the only acid that can be used successfully with lead nitrate to test for chloride

CN somebody expalin me why is this.......that was taken from ER

HCL has Cl ions so obviously we cant use it for Cl ions test!

Assalamoalaikum!!

Well yeah we shudnt use any acid containing halide ion :!: cuz we're actually testing for the halide...so we'll use nitric acid for halide test...whether it is chloride or bromide..or any halide!

when i was performing test for Pb 2+ ....a milky solution formed in excess of sodium hydroxide......is it correct or shud it be clorless since it dissolves on adding NaOH

it depends perhaps there is any other cation present...but if its only pb+2 then i guess it should dissolve!

msk is right.... It needs to be colourless if only Lead ions are there... White precipitate dissolves in excess of NaOH... While in excess of Ammonia it remains insoluble...
