^The majority of the UK gives Edexcel exams.
Nonetheless, there's reason to believe that the article is meant for all UK examinations in general.

In an interview yesterday, he said grade inflation ‘discredits the integrity of our education system’ and GCSEs, A-levels and degrees must get I‘tougher’.

Its about A levels and its mentioned... not some exam board...... Coz we get degree from them, We should be worried!!

They should raise their standard of checking instead of making it more strict! Instead of giving the same marks to a student who describes the inducing effect on an atom near a charged sphere as " splitting of atom as electrons leave the atom" and the student who describes it by writing " no effect " , giving these two people the same credit and only giving the marks to a student who writes, "electrons are stripped off the atom" I consider it low standard of checking. Or they could have mentioned it in their textbooks!
And work harder?? What to work harder on?? Students spend almost one and a half year looking for the resources and collecting where to study from! Give us a classified material to work harder on then if they want grades to lift up. :( It's not a detective mystery about who knows the techniques gets it, and who doesn't , falls... It is like that! I know from my last year exam. Work harder doesn't work in A level, you have to work harder on the correct material! There's negative marking in exams. Seriously, they should raise their standard of checking and marking...
I worked so hard, and missed like maximum 2 to 3 classes of my Physics tution or maybe less than that, and missed some classes during school Mocks because I had to work on the past papers and revision and try to figure out even more what the examiners wanted. Well, I worked harder, and in the exam, none of those things came up. Section A was too easy, even a student who learnt the syllabus the previous night might have aced it . I didn't work more on section B, because i was too worried about their checking and how demanding it was on section A... So they need to raise "their" standard of checking!

The more worrying thing than the course is their style of checking and what they demand! Their textbooks are insufficient! I know the material, i'm giving re- take, I studied so hard last year and got a U in Chemistry . Work hard to get A , that's just non- sense in some cases! Whoever I told , almost noone believes me . They say work harder next time, as though i did nothing... CIE wants to judge grades on work harder, they should see the pile of registers I got filled up this year, Alhamdulillah.
So just work harder doesn't fit here! It's about exam performance, polishing your mind into the CIE perspective! Seriously, if they give us in the syllabus content and in past papers reactions of group 2 oxides, and ask us in the exams the reaction of group 2 metals with Sulphates, that's out of the course! Even if it's from O level, it is out of the course! It's like they're expecting us to be either born- geinus, or do a phd before giving A level! :(

Well in any case I'll try to do my best for the exams: changed policy or not.
I wouldn't worry about such stuff. If the marking system has gotten tougher, then: 'When the going gets tough, the tough get....um";)
