A* Grades

Here are the A* Grades for the previous year, so what you should be aiming for:

- French Foreign Language (0520) : 87%+
- Literature (English) (0486) : 74%+
- English (First Language) (0500): 71%+
- Mathematics (0580): 88%+
- ICT: 88%+
- Chemistry (0680) : 74%+
**** To get A* in chemistry you needed the following minimum marks in each component:
Component 1 32/40 80%
Component 3 50/80 63%
Component 5 29/40 73%
Component 6 52/60 87%
AVERAGE NEEDED: 74%

From where you got to know the grade thresholds for an A*? I Downloaded the grade thresholds but in that, threshold for A grade is given but not for an A*.

CIE website is on maintenance, you could have found them there....

To calculate the A* threshold, CIE take the A grade and B grade threshold and then subtract A-B and add the value onto the A grade to give the A*, they then add all the A* values and take them as a percentage of the raw marks available for all components.

EG.

In an exam say English FL:
Component 1:
A= 35/50
B = 30/50
A* = 35-30 = 5 (+35) = 40/50

Component 3:
A = 30/50
B = 24/50
A* = 30 - 24 = 6 (+30) = 36/50

OVERALL % FOR A* = 76%+

This rule is same for all CIE IGCSE's.

Component 1:
A = 68/100
B= 61/100

Component 2:
A = 66/80
B = 56/80

Component 3:
A = 69/80
B = 61/80

A* = 75+76+77 = 228/260 = 88%

Dayuuum.. you need to get 95% overall to get an A* in ict??

100 + 80 + 80 = 260, not 240.

so 228/260 = 88%

By the way, how is it that you know this is the way CIE calculates the A* threshold?

I was told by my exam centre, the CIE examiner told them.

No he/she can't. Grade thresholds are not available for O'level subjects.

No it doesn't mean that. CIE just doesn't release the component marks for O'levels. The grading system is same but they don't publish it.

ARE you sure???? Could you give a break down on each of those. My teachers have been saying 90%+ is A*
