As you see the force acting on the handle (right and left) are at different distances from the pivot and since momentum= force x distance.. the distance for the upper 100N is greater therefore the momentum is greater causing the handle to turn anti-clockwise :)
whats the effect of the force that is acting downwards ?

whats the effect of the force that is acting downwards ?

It's acting on the pivot and the pivot is applying a force back so they cancel out each other leaving the right and left forces to decide the direction the handle will turn

and oahmed64 u do now tht equilibrium is when thr is no resultant force right?
equilibrium is when anti clockwise moment is equal to clockwise moment and upward force is equal to downward,so how can it be possible if both of them are acting downwards?

yess but u forgot.....when there is no resultant force! the anticlockwise IS equal to the clockwise thts y the rod is straight and horizontal!

this is a confusing question, because there would be a fourth force of the pivot on the handle, which would be upwards 100N, so yes the vertical forces will be balanced, and the turning effect (moment, NOT momentum) would turn the handle anti-clockwise. so answer C.

we have walkthroughs of most of the recent paper 1s here: http://igcsephysicstutor.com/tutorial-videos/exam-paper-walkthroughs.html - these may be helpful...

Guys for the question about the thermal capacity? What was the answer? I chooses A because it was the smallest block.
